Running Water Series
is a series of five kilometer road races designed to raise awareness lack of access to clean, safe drinking water and adequate sanitation experienced by many around the world. The five kilometer distance is symbolic of the five kilometers that women and children walk on average in Burkina Faso to obtain just five gallons of water.
The inaugural event, called the Peace, Water, and Wisdom Race, was held on October 2, 2011 in Bangor, Maine. Nearly 100 individuals braved the forecasted rainy weather to race for the cause. Since this inaugural event, the series has grown to become a network 5k road races, all working to allow Initiative: Eau to continue its endeavors with events having been held in Maine, Massachusetts, and California.
