Our Story

how we transformed from a series of road races to an international organization

  • Call to action

Co-founders Christina Long and Donald Brooks learned of global water scarcity during a presentation at their high school in central Maine.  The presentation discussed the reality that millions around the world live without access to clean water and basic sanitation.  For both, it was a call to action.

  • The inaugural event

Our co-founders organized the first annual Peace, Water, and Wisdom Race in Bangor, Maine, U.S.A. to support water projects in Burkina Faso. Nearly 100 individuals braved the forecasted rainy weather to race for the cause. The event was held annually by a John Bapst Memorial High School student group until 2016.

  • Initiative: Eau Established

Christina and Donald signed Initiative: Eau into existence as they completed the organization's Articles of Incorporation. The organization's original mission was to provide sustainable support and education to regions experiencing lack of access to clean water and basic sanitation.

  • Programming Launch with WASHMobile

We began implementation of our first pilot program, WASHMobile, in the Eastern region of Burkina Faso. WASHMobile was an integrated research and data-distribution program aimed at reducing water-borne disease and improving drinking water infrastructure in developing urban centers.

  • Brooks receives Fulbright grant

Co-founder and CEO Donald Brooks was awarded a Fulbright grant from the U.S. State Department to conduct research through Initiative: Eau on the water quality landscapes of cities in Burkina Faso to inform strategic infrastructure and public health program planning.

  • Granted Consultative status with the United Nations

We were granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Special Consultative Status is granted to select non-governmental organizations allowing them to access inter-governmental activities at the United Nations, enabling Initiative: Eau to showcase our progress on a global stage.

  • West Africa Regional Office Opening

We opened our West Africa regional office in Fada N'gourma, Burkina Faso. Fada N'gourma, capital of the Eastern region, was chosen strategically given the Eastern region's low rates of safe water access, second lowest in Burkina after the Sahel. As well, the city boasts proximity with nearby Niger, Benin, and Togo, allowing regional mobility.

  • National World Water Day for Burkina Faso

Initiative: Eau co-organized and co-hosted the Foire de l'Eau, the national 2018 World Water Day event in Burkina Faso. The Foire de l'Eau was designed to address shortcomings of the WASH domain by providing a space where water stakeholders can share information and build partnerships to increase our collective impact.

  • Grants for H2Odata.city.fada

Initiative: Eau is awarded grants from the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou and the International Foundation to support H2Odata.city.fada, a sustainability project to improve local water infrastructure monitoring and maintenance capacity in Fada N'gourma.

Our Financials

transparency is one of our core beliefs

As one of our core values, we believe transparency is of fundamental importance.  We believe openness to public inspection allows us to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect with contributors to our cause.  We consider this transparency to be an opportunity for increased accountability.  To accomplish this, we have published below information pertinent to our financial activities; other documents may be available upon request.

2016

2016 was a year of capacity building.  We were able to raise and mobilize funds to amplify our efforts to improve safe drinking water services.  2016 brought with it opportunities to disseminate our programs and our approach, while also allowing us to fortify our in-country presence.
