Our Story

learn about how we transformed from a series of road races to an international NGO

In April 2010, co-founders Donald Brooks and Christina Long learned of water scarcity during a presentation at their high school in central Maine by the BARKA Foundation.  BARKA discussed the reality that millions around the world are without access to clean water and basic sanitation was brought to their attention.  For both, it was a call to action.  They started what would become Initiative: Eau.

  • September 2010

Our co-founders were compelled to act to help see an end to the Water Crisis. They organized the first annual Peace, Water, and Wisdom (PWW) Race in Bangor, ME to support water project in Burkina Faso.

  • October 2011

The PWW Race quickly grew into the Peace, Water and Wisdom Race Series as Christina and D.J. helped to organize a second event in the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts.

  • July 2013

On July 24, 2013, Christina and D.J. signed Initiative: Eau into existence as they completed Initiative: Eau's Articles of Incorporation.

  • January 2015

The IRS ruled that Initiative: Eau fulfilled the requirements of a 501(c)3 public charity in the United States.

  • June 2015

We began implementation of our program WASHMobile in the cities of Ouagadougou and Fada N’Gourma, Burkina Faso.

  • January 2016

Our team expanded to a total of 10 with agents in Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Nigeria, and Burkina Faso.

  • February 2016

Initiative: Eau expanded to Nigeria under the leadership of Country Director Funmilola Ojelade.

transparency is one of our core beliefs

As one of our core values, we believe transparency is of fundamental importance.  We believe openness to public inspection allows us to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect with contributors to our cause.  We consider this transparency to be an opportunity for increased accountability.  To accomplish this, we have published below information pertinent to our financial activities; other documents may be available upon request.

2016

2016 was a year of capacity building.  We were able to raise and mobilize funds to amplify our efforts to improve safe drinking water services.  2016 brought with it opportunities to disseminate our programs and our approach, while also allowing us to fortify our in-country presence.
