Our Story

learn about how we transformed from a series of road races to an international NGO

In April 2010, co-founders Donald J. Brooks and Christina M. Long learned of water scarcity during a presentation at their high school in central Maine by the co-founders of the BARKA Foundation.  The co-founders discussed the reality that millions around the world are without access to clean water and basic sanitation.  For both, it was a call to action.  They started what would become Initiative: Eau.

  • September 2010

Our co-founders were compelled to act to help see an end to the Water Crisis. They organized the first annual Peace, Water, and Wisdom (PWW) Race in Bangor, ME to support water projects in Burkina Faso.

  • July 2013

On July 31, 2013, Christina and D.J. signed Initiative: Eau into existence as they completed Initiative: Eau's Articles of Incorporation.

  • February 2016

Initiative: Eau expanded to Nigeria under the leadership of Country Representative Funmilola Ojelade.

  • June 2017

Initiative: Eau is granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

  • August 2017

We opened our Burkina Faso Country Headquarters in Fada N'gourma.

  • March 2017

Initiative: Eau co-organized and co-hosted the Foire de l'Eau, the national 2018 World Water Day event in Burkina Faso.

  • April 2018

Initiative: Eau is awarded a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou to support H2Odata.city in Fada N'gourma.
